Revamped Apple Watch: Health and Design Leap

In the year 2023, Apple made a few tweaks to its Apple Watch lineup, but the real excitement is building for the 2024 models. According to insights from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, the upcoming Apple Watches are set to bring a fresh set of features that will capture the interest of consumers.

Gurman hints at a revamped appearance for at least one Apple Watch model, though the exact one remains unspecified. While the Apple Watch Ultra emerged in 2022, speculation about a larger microLED display is in the air. However, credible sources suggest that Apple might not integrate microLED technology until 2025 or 2026.

Gurman has previously hinted at a substantial update to mark the tenth anniversary of the Apple Watch. Although the initial announcement was in September 2014, the actual launch occurred in April 2015, causing a bit of uncertainty about whether the tenth anniversary lands in 2024 or 2025. With the anticipated "Apple Watch Series 10" in 2024 and Gurman pointing to a design overhaul, it's plausible that this might be the milestone "anniversary" model.

The anticipated redesign might bring a sleeker profile and a novel magnetic mechanism for band attachment. However, the real allure could lie in the enhanced health features. Gurman predicts that the next-gen Apple Watch will have the capability to detect hypertension and sleep apnea—two widespread health concerns.

To identify hypertension, the Apple Watch will utilize wrist-based blood pressure monitoring, showcasing an impressive engineering feat. Gurman mentions that wearers will receive alerts if their blood pressure is on an upward trend, allowing them to share these insights with medical professionals. Although exact systolic and diastolic measurements won't be provided initially, a future iteration may offer this precision.

In the realm of sleep health, the Apple Watch is poised to detect sleep apnea through analysis of sleep patterns and breathing. Typically diagnosed through overnight sleep studies, this feature could streamline the process, offering early warnings even for milder cases. This proactive approach might empower individuals unaware of their condition to seek assistance and enhance their sleep quality.

Keeping with its annual tradition, Apple is likely to unveil the refreshed Apple Watch in September 2024, coinciding with the iPhone 16 lineup. As the anticipation builds, users can look forward to a device that not only boasts a new look but also introduces cutting-edge health features.
