AI, VR, and zuckerberg's strategies

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, is set to commence the Connect developer conference in Menlo Park, California, with a primary focus on virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence.

Meta, previously known as Facebook, is anticipated to reveal the upcoming iteration of its virtual reality headset, the Quest 3. Additionally, they will discuss AI-powered chatbots and various tools and features aimed at retaining user engagement on Facebook and Instagram, especially in the face of stiff competition from TikTok. Insider Intelligence analyst Yoram Wurmser highlights this ongoing challenge as Meta's most significant hurdle.

To counteract the impact of declining online advertising and global economic uncertainty, Meta has undertaken substantial workforce reductions, cutting over 20,000 jobs since the previous November. Zuckerberg has labeled 2023 as the company's "year of efficiency," focusing on streamlining the workforce while recruiting technical experts, particularly in the field of AI, to align with Meta's long-term vision.

Artificial intelligence plays a pivotal role in this vision. Earlier in the summer, Meta introduced the next generation of its AI-powered large language model, Llama 2, making it available for both research and commercial purposes free of charge.

Similar to tech giants like Google and Microsoft, Meta has maintained a substantial research team of computer scientists dedicated to advancing AI technology. However, its efforts have somewhat been overshadowed by the surge in interest surrounding "generative AI" tools following the release of ChatGPT, which can generate new written content, images, and other media.

Zuckerberg has also announced that people can access Meta's new AI models directly or through a partnership that offers them on Microsoft's Azure cloud platform, along with Microsoft's safety and content management tools.
