Understanding Lou Holtz reacts to Ryan day's criticism

Former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz responded to Ohio State's Ryan Day's recent remarks with understanding, acknowledging why Day criticized him following Ohio State's 17-14 victory over Notre Dame.

During an episode of Dan Dakich's "Don't @ Me" podcast, Holtz shared his perspective, saying, "Day doesn't want to discuss Michigan, where they stand at 0-2. He's avoiding conversations about the upcoming significant matches against Penn State and Michigan once again."

Holtz offered praise for Day, acknowledging his coaching prowess and offensive expertise. However, he stopped short of categorizing Ohio State as a great football team, asserting, "They're a good football team, but I don't believe they've reached greatness. If he wants to criticize me, that's his prerogative."

In the lead-up to the game against Ohio State, Holtz questioned the Buckeyes' toughness during an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show." He asserted that Ohio State had a history of being overpowered by physically stronger opponents, citing this as a common theme in their losses under Day's leadership.

Holtz made a bold statement on Friday, claiming, "Notre Dame is superior to Ohio State in football." He also pointed out Day's previous losses to powerhouse teams like Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, and Michigan.

After Ohio State's nail-biting victory, Day expressed his emotions on the field, praising his team's grit and addressing Holtz's earlier comments. Day challenged Holtz's assessment, stating, "I'd like to know where Lou Holtz is right now. What he said about our team, I cannot believe. This is a tough team right here. We're proud to represent Ohio ... It's always been Ohio against the world, and it will continue to be Ohio against the world."

Holtz, on Tuesday, expressed regret that his remarks had offended Coach Day, reiterating his belief in Notre Dame's superiority and asserting, "I hope he has a fantastic season. However, I still maintain that they won the football game."

Analyzing Holtz's Criticisms:

While Holtz's criticisms of Day and the Ohio State program are valid to some extent, they do not provide a complete picture. Day has a 1-2 record against Michigan, securing a significant win in his debut season as head coach with a 56-27 victory. Most of the concerns about Ohio State's perceived lack of physicality stem from their two recent losses to Michigan, which is why Day emphasized his 0-2 record in this context.

In the last two encounters with Michigan, Ohio State struggled, conceding a total of 49 points in the second half and yielding 430 rushing yards. While Day's comments resonated well with fans and within the program, the label of "soft" that critics have attached to Ohio State since those losses will persist if Day loses to Michigan for the third consecutive time.
