Alan Williams Resigns as Bears defensive coordinator

Alan Williams unexpectedly resigned from his role as the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator to prioritize his well-being and family. Williams was absent from the team's recent game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, citing personal issues as the cause. After a year and a half with the team, he has officially stepped down.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Williams expressed his regret about resigning but emphasized his need to focus on his health and family. He thanked the Bears organization, especially the McCaskey family (the team's owners), Coach Matt Eberflus, and General Manager Ryan Poles for the opportunity to work with the historic NFL franchise.

Williams, who joined the Bears in February 2022, boasts over 30 years of coaching experience. He was previously a part of the coaching staff for the Indianapolis Colts, contributing to their Super Bowl XLI victory in 2007 as the defensive backs coach. Despite his resignation, Williams expressed his intention to return to coaching after addressing his health concerns.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus refrained from providing further details about the situation, but he assumed defensive play-calling duties during the recent game against the Buccaneers and plans to do so again in the upcoming match against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Eberflus, who previously served as a defensive coordinator with the Colts, believes that the Bears can manage without a defensive coordinator for the time being, citing the team's defensive experience as a strength.

The Bears have had a challenging start to the season, with a 0-2 record and criticism directed at key players like quarterback Justin Fields, wide receiver Chase Claypool, and even Coach Eberflus. Fields has publicly suggested that coaching might be a factor contributing to his performance struggles. The team's recent loss to Tampa Bay marked their 12th consecutive defeat, a streak that began in October 2022, making it the longest active losing streak in the NFL. The Bears will face a formidable opponent in the defending champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in their next game.
