Ryder Cup captain's bold move to reverse U.S. fortunes

GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy -- In a surprising move, American Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson has decided to bench Brooks Koepka and Scottie Scheffler for the Saturday afternoon four-balls. This decision comes after a morning of disappointing results for the U.S. team, which currently trails 9½-2½ in the overall score, having lost 3-1 in the morning foursomes.

Johnson is hoping to turn the tide in the afternoon session by reshuffling his lineup. However, he has chosen to leave out two prominent players, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and five-time major winner Brooks Koepka.

The duo faced a humiliating defeat earlier in the day, losing 9 and 7 to Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg in the foursomes. This defeat marked a historic low as it became the most lopsided loss ever recorded in Ryder Cup history over 18 holes in either four-balls or foursomes.

Television cameras captured Scheffler's emotional reaction at the 11th hole as he grappled with the enormity of the loss. So far in the competition, Scheffler has managed to secure only half a point, the result of a tie with Jon Rahm and Nicolai Hojgaard on Saturday.

Rickie Fowler also finds himself on the bench, having seen action only in Friday morning's foursomes, where he and Collin Morikawa suffered a defeat against Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka.

These newly announced pairings mean that Max Homa will be the lone American to compete in all five sessions. On the European side, Luke Donald has chosen to rest Jon Rahm, leaving Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland as the only two players participating in all five sessions for the host team.
